Jason Covert left no doubt he is back in form Friday night as he totally dominated the Annual Laurel Highlands event at Thunder Valley. The 35 lap Three State Flyer win was worth $3000 to Covert, who had gone winless since an earlier 2012 win at the track. In other action, on a night with the backdrop of the Cruising for Courtney charity, one of the biggest Courtney backers Dave Whetstone claimed the emotional Semi Late win. Ryan Beckett made it two in a row by coming from deep in the field in the Pure Stock event and Dan Jackson claimed the 4 Cylinder finale.
Covert had some luck as well as speed early in the program as a last lap pass on Greg Satterlee for second in his heat got him into the dash. He drew the pole for the dash and ran away from that field to ensure a pole position start for the 35 lap feature. He used that starting position to zip away from the field at the start and never looked back.
After a few early cautions, when the field settled down, Covert easily stretched out the distance on second place runner Andy Haus with each lap. Haus eventually found himself in the clutches of David Williams in a battle that went almost to the finish. Williams finally got the spot when Haus retired on lap 27. Thunder Valley point leader Chuck Clise was up to fifth until he car broke on lap 12, jeopardizing that position.
But at the front of the field, Covert left no doubt who was in charge as he ran off to the easy win after the 35 laps. Williams chased him across the line across the line for second, his best ever TV finish. Greg Fetters , Jeremy Miller and Satterlee completed the top 5. Doug Glessner, Ron Delano, Tom Decker, Devin Friese and Chris Rhodes completed the top 10. Justin Kann, Clise and Haus won the heats. Covert won the dash. Sean Merkle won the B.
In heat race action, two of the winners, Clise and Kann broke at the finish. Kann was done for the night but jumped into the qualified car of Larry Foor and started the feature, Clise made repairs but only made those few laps in the event. Track all time leading winner Scott Rhodes made a surprise visit in his familiar 83. He was up to fifth when the motor gave way on lap 30 bringing out the last caution.
Whetstone started the semi Late 20 lapper on the pole and had to fight off a herd of challengers for the duration. Jamie Kohan was all over his bumper before Jim Sayler, Greg Cornell and Tom Warren arrived to make it a 5 car pack.Luckily for Whetstone, the others occupied thei rtime with themselves and whetstone ran off to the win. After trading positions behind the leader, Kohan snared second, ahead of Cornell, Sayler and Warren. Jason Vangilder, Bill Pluta, Dennis Collins, Levi Duppstadt, and Ryan Beckett completed the top 10.
Terry Mitchell led the Pure Stock event for the first three laps before Brian Shaw got by. Shaw held on as Beckett came from eighth place to run him down. Finally on lap 16, Beckett shot by for he win. Shaw hung on for second, followed by Mike Duck, Terry Norris and Russ Hartman. Hartman and Carl Snare won the heats.
Dan Jackson got by Leroy Booher at the start but had to hold off Robert Pluta for the 4 Cylinder win. Pluta was all over Jackson for the last 5 laps but could not get by. Andrew Pluta was closing fast on the pair but his wheel came off while heading for the finish line. Jarred Barclay snagged the third spot but failed the tech putting Pluta back to third, ahead of Booher and Tyler Beckett. Jackson and Dustin Drake won the heats.
